India has found its Lithium reserves in Mandya, Karnataka

Bengaluru: In a great piece of news, India has found its Lithium reserves in Mandya, Karnataka. 

To be precise, it is in the igneous rocks located in the Marlagalla-Allapatna region. 

The amount discovered stands at a tiny 1,600 tonnes, but it goes a long way in becoming self-reliant, for presently, India depends entirely on its imports for its Lithium-related uses. 

The discovery comes as a part of the survey of Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD), which is an arm of Centre's Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), notes a popular website. 

It should be noted that the extraction of lithium from the brine pools of Rajasthan and Gujarat and the mica belts of Odisha and Chhattisgarh.

Lithium uses: 

It is very important to note that Lithium has a very major role to play in the field of medicine, especially in treating bipolar disorder. It is used to treat schizoaffective disorder and depression as well. It is also important to note that it is used in treating cluster headaches. 

In everyday life, Lithium is found in grains and vegetables and even in drinking water. 

Role in transportation: 

India has set a vision to electrify its transportation system. 

For this purpose, Lithium plays a very important role. 

So India needs Lithium to produce Lithium-ion batteries to run vehicles. 

India has also set up a refinery in Gujarat as it imports lithium from Australia.
