Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s tweet on International Yoga Day was met with backlash. Union home minister Amit Shah slammed him for ‘insulting’ the Army
New Delhi: Union home minister and BJP national president Amit Shah slammed Congress chief Rahul Gandhi for his tweet on International Yoga Day on Friday (June 21).
Gandhi took to Twitter to post a photo of Indian Army dogs and their handlers performing yoga asanas on the occasion of International Yoga Day with the caption, “New India”.
Tweets poured in slamming Rahul. This included BJP leaders such as Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, who tweeted, “Ok. He still hasn't learned his lessons. In one go, he has insulted our Army, brave Jawans, the incredible dog unit, Yoga tradition & our country. I feel really sad for all the young Congress workers (if there are any left) that they have to deal with this man as their leader (sic).”
Not long after, Shah also joined and hit out at the Congress president stating, “Congress stands for negativity. Today, their negativity was seen in their clear support to the medieval practice of Triple Talaq. Now, they mock Yoga Day and insult our forces (yet again!) Hoping the spirit of positivity will prevail. It can help overcome the toughest challenges (sic).”
But it didn’t end there, Union minister Prakash Javadekar also responded to the tweet and said, “It’s a sign of the Congress’s depression and frustration. When the entire world is celebrating the International Yoga Day, he posts such a tweet. A person tweets according to his level.”
Twitterati were also left wondering why Rahul posted such a tweet.
For the first time, this year’s yoga celebration saw Chinese Army troops and civilians participate in a joint yoga session with the Indian Army personnel along the Indo-China border.
As many as 70 Chinese Army personnel and 30 civilians participated in the joint yoga sessions at Nathu-La in Sikkim and at Bumla and Wacha-Damai in Arunachal Pradesh.
June 21, the Northern Hemisphere's longest day, is celebrated as the International Yoga Day worldwide after the United Nations General Assembly adopted in 2014 a proposal mooted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
