Heatwaves to continue in Tamil Nadu, Telangana; respite for Kerala, Karnataka

The Indian Meteorological Department’s forecast said that several parts of north Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, would experience heatwaves till Thursday and isolated parts of Telangana too would witness hot spell till Wednesday.

Chennai: Chennai recorded a temperature of 40 degree Celsius on Monday. Despite monsoon entering Kerala and Karnataka that have been experiencing heavy rainfall, it is expected that parts of Tamil Nadu and Telangana will continue to witness heatwaves.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, several parts of north Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, would experience heatwaves till Thursday.

Weather stations at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 41.5 degree Celsius on Monday. IMD has asked people to remain indoors between 11 am and 4 pm.

Heatwaves to continue in Telangana too.

Adilabad district on Monday recorded the highest temperature of 44.3 degree Celsius in Telangana. After Adilabad, Ramagundam recorded 43.4 degree Celsius while Hyderabad recorded 38.7 degree Celsius. 

IMD has issued a warning that heatwave conditions are very likely to prevail at isolated pockets in different districts of the state till June 12. Parts of Telangana have been experiencing heatwaves for over a month with the mercury crossing the 40-degree Celsius mark in several places. 

The IMD also warned of a thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds and lightning at isolated places on Tuesday.

Cyclone Vayu:

Meanwhile, the Cyclone Vayu is expected to move over the east-central area on Tuesday evening with a wind speed of 90-100 kmph. Vayu is likely to have a mild impact over the Lakshadweep area, Kerala, Karnataka and south Maharashtra coasts, said SkyMetWeather.
