Bengaluru: 27-year-old Sana Khan, living in the city of Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, is a role model.

She has her own company SJ Organics. This company produces vermicompost by conventional methods. What began in 2014 is now running profitably with a turnover of Rs 1 crore.

Such is her popularity that none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi extolled her for her efforts in his Mann Ki Baat.

Sana says, “My father is a ladies tailor, my maternal grandfather used to run a garage and my brother used to work in a factory. They all wanted me to become a doctor, but in the medical entrance examination, my rank was 18 less than the selection could not be done. While UPTU was ranked 45, I got admission in BTech Biotech at IMS Engineering College, Ghaziabad on tuition fee waiver. I used to go up and down from Ghaziabad and Meerut, I used to take three hours daily to get to and from the train. The rest of the girls with me lived in hostels”.

Sana adds more, “I understood that farmers use it at a very limited level. In such a situation, I decided to implement this project on a large scale. Later I made vermicomposting the medium of business”.

Regarding vermicomposting, Sana says, 'It is a process of preparing organic manure using earthworms. Biomass is the food of earthworms and the soil extracted by them is called 'Worm Cast' which is full of all nutrients. This is the reason why it is also called 'Black Gold'”.

It was in 2014 that Sana started her company with the help of her brother Junaid. It takes about one and a half months to convert cow dung and organic material into vermicompost. After this, compost is filtered and urine is added to it, which acts as a natural pesticide and fertilizer.

In this way, she has created a sort of revolution.
