Former Union law minister, prominent lawyer Ram Jethmalani passes away at 95

New Delhi: Noted jurist Ram Jethmalani breathed his last on Sunday (September 8) at the age of 95, his family members said.

Speaking to reporters, his son Mahesh Jethmalani said that Ram Jethmalani passed away at 7:45 am at his official residence in New Delhi.

Jethmalani's son Mahesh and other close acquaintances said he was not keeping well for a few months.

Mahesh further added that Ram Jethmalani passed away four days before his 96th birthday on September 14.

Mahesh said his father's last rites would be performed in the evening at the Lodhi Road crematorium in New Delhi.

Ram Jethmalani was born in Sikhapur of Sindh province on September 14, 1923. He had also fought many high-profile cases in the Supreme Court, high courts and trial courts.

One of the cases he would be remembered for is the KM Nanavati vs the state of Maharashtra case in which he was the prosecutor.

In 2010, Jethmalani was elected as the president of Supreme Court Bar Association.

Jethmalani was also elected as a BJP MP in the sixth and seventh Lok Sabha. He had also held the portfolio of urban development in Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government.
