The Indian Navy and DRDO have achieved a significant milestone in maritime security with the successful testing of the Vertical Launch Short Range Missile (VL-SRSAM). This missile is capable of targeting high-speed aerial threats at low altitudes, further strengthening India's sea defense.

Thursday, September 12, 2024, marked a significant day for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy. The Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) was successfully test-fired. The test was conducted from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) located at Chandipur, off the coast of Odisha. During the test, the missile successfully intercepted a high-speed aerial target flying at low altitude, demonstrating its precise targeting capabilities. This missile will prove to be a milestone for maritime security.

What is VL-SRSAM?

The VL-SRSAM (Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile) is a modern missile system designed to protect naval ships from aerial threats. This surface-to-air missile is launched from ships using a vertical launcher.

What was the purpose of the missile test?

The purpose of the VL-SRSAM test was to evaluate the capabilities of the weapon system, including its proximity fuse and seeker, to validate it for operational use. During the test, the missile successfully destroyed the aerial target, proving its capabilities. In the future, it will be a crucial weapon in the Indian Navy's arsenal.

Missile capabilities tested during the trial

High-tech instruments were used during the testing to assess the missile's capabilities. This allowed for monitoring the missile's flight, target acquisition, and neutralization process. Radar, electro-optical tracking systems, and telemetry were used to closely observe the missile's performance. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended the teams from the Indian Navy and DRDO. DRDO Chairman Dr Samir V. Kamat also congratulated the teams involved in the successful testing.
