Doordarshan celebrates 60 years of bringing television to India; highlights its major shows

Though the television service began as an experiment on September 14, 1959, the broadcaster Doordarshan started its regular transmission on September 15, 1965

Bengaluru: India's first television service provider, Doordarshan, turned 60 today (September 15). To mark the state-owned network's sixty years of service, Doordarshan took to Twitter and released a series of videos that highlighted its iconic programmes over the years.

This superhero television show aired on Doordarshan or DD 1 from September 13, 1997, to March 27, 2005. The role of Shaktimaan was played by its producer, Mukesh Khanna, who was called as "Pandit Gangadhar Vidhyadhar Mayadhar Omkarnath Shastri", a newspaper photographer.

This Indian fantasy television series is partly based on Devaki Nandan Khatri's novel of the same name. This television show was initially telecasted on Doordarshan's DD National between 1994 and 1996. The series, Chandrakanta, was created, written, produced, and directed by Nirja Guleri.

Based on Indian mythology, this television series was also aired on DD National. The concept of the program was based on Baital Pachisi, a collection of tales about the legendary King Vikramaditya and the ghost Vetala.

Cricket World Cup, 1983

Millions of Indians witnessed India's first Cricket World Cup victory, in 1983, on Doordarshan. However, Doordarshan could not broadcast the entire match live, and missed captain Kapil Dev taking a catch to end Vivian Richards's innings.
