Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, is often referred to as the city of lakes and is celebrated as one of the greenest cities in India. Did you know that Bhopal is also home to both India's largest and smallest mosques? These remarkable structures are renowned not only across the country but also around the world. Let’s explore their fascinating stories!
600 mosques in the city
Bhopal is home to 602 mosques, of which 15 are classified as historical. The Royal Awqaf is responsible for the maintenance of these heritage sites, while the upkeep of the remaining mosques falls under the jurisdiction of Auqaf-e-Amma. Experts note that the official count of recorded mosques is only part of the picture; numerous additional mosques exist, and their exact numbers remain unknown since they are overseen by private institutions.
Taj-ul-Masajid: India's largest mosque
Taj-ul-Masajid, located in Bhopal, is the largest mosque in India. Its construction was initiated by Shah Jahan Begum (1844-1901), but she was unable to complete it during her lifetime. Following her death, her daughter, Sultan Jahan Begum, took up the task. However, construction faced delays due to financial constraints. In 1971, efforts to complete the mosque resumed, with significant contributions from Maulana Mohammad Imran Khan Nadvi and Maulana Syed Hashmat Ali Sahab of Bhopal. Ultimately, in 1985, with support from the Government of Madhya Pradesh, the construction was successfully completed.
The Taj-ul-Masajid features three stunning domes and two towering minarets, all designed in the Islamic and Mughal architectural styles. Surrounding the mosque is a spacious courtyard, complemented by three pond-like ablution areas for ritual washing. The mosque's three domes, crafted from elegant marble, add to its beauty and allure, making it a remarkable landmark in Bhopal.
Asia's smallest mosque
Asia's smallest mosque, known as Dhai Seedi Wali Masjid, is situated within the premises of Hamidia Hospital. It is believed to be the first mosque established in the city. Originally constructed for the security personnel stationed at the Fatehgarh Fort in Bhopal, this mosque can accommodate just 5 to 7 people for prayers at a time. Its unique size and historical significance make it a notable landmark in the area.
