The Uddhav Thackeray government in Maharashtra has transferred senior lady police officer Shalini Sharma to Chembur police station after SP MLA Abu Asim Azmi had some problems with her

Bengaluru: A lot of focus has been set aside to scrutinise the ills going on in Gujarat during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

And rightly so. In a democracy, the establishment must be repeatedly questioned and be made accountable. But there is one piece of news that might skip the radar of many who rush and jump to guillotine Gujarat government and remain conspicuously and deafeningly silent when orchestrations and influences take place in other states.

Take for example what happened in Maharashtra.

A few days ago, there were news reports that the Uddhav Thackeray government in the state had transferred senior lady police officer Shalini Sharma to Chembur police station.

She was an inspector at the Nagpada police station.

News reports add that Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi was caught humiliating her.

The Uddhav Thackeray government had succumbed to the pressure exerted by the MLA.

However, it should also be noted that the Maharashtra police officers have maintained that she had herself sought a transfer and the officers countenanced it.

A web portal reported him shouting a slogan “Yeh aurat kehti hain aapne police par ilzaam lagaya hain mein aapse baat nahi karegi, uske baap ke baap ke baap ko bhi baat karni padegi”, roughly translated as “This woman is saying that we have accused the police so she will not talk to us, but her forefathers will also have to speak to us), shouted Azmi while demanding her suspension.”

It must also be noted that Azmi had grievances and wanted to lodge complaint, but he alleged the lady officer didn’t pay heed to him.

He said, “I am a public representative, I am not a common man. I have been elected by the people and we will raise their questions in front of the government. The whole world is criticising India for its handling of the migrant worker crisis.”

When the lady officer didn’t meet his demands, he gathered a number of people and protested, thereby compromising on social distancing norms.
