Bhubaneswar: Ten people were killed in two separate incidents as Cyclone Fani battered the Odisha coast on Friday, the officials said.
According to sources, a teenager was killed after a tree came crashing down on him at a place within Sakhigopal police station limits in Puri district.
Flying debris from a concrete structure hit a woman in Nayagarh district when she had gone to fetch water leaving her severely injured. Later, she succumbed to her injuries.
In Debendranarayanpur village in Kendrapara district, a 65-year-old woman died after a suspected heart attack at a cyclone shelter, officials said.
Fani, an extremely severe cyclonic storm lashed Odisha’s coastal areas on Friday morning, uprooting trees, blowing away thatched huts, and disrupting communication links.
On Saturday early morning, Fani weakened into a cyclonic storm over West Bengal and lay centred about 60 km Northwest of Kolkata at 5:30 am. It will be weakened further into a deep depression and move to Bangladesh by the afternoon. It is said that no further damages are expected in West Bengal.
People have been asked to remain indoors. The railway department has made necessary arrangements in major stations across the east zone. People will be facilitated with adequate food and drinking water.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, about 800,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas of 14 districts in Odisha. Rehabilitation centres have also been arranged in the case of an emergency.
