An auto driver in Mumbai has started to give free rides to covid patients in the ongoing covid pandemic
Bengaluru: While Indian is the midst of an unprecedented pandemic, we keep getting stories of despair and despondency. People crying for oxygen, its cylinders and hospital beds are known to all.
But every cloud has a silver lining, and so does the pandemic. There are noble souls out there who have used this adversity as an opportunity to help fellow citizens.
Dattatreya Sawant, hailing from Mumbai, is an English teacher. But now, he has changed his profession to that of an auto driver.
All thanks to the shutting down of schools in Mumbai due to the pandemic, he now runs three-wheeler to make ends meet.
He now ensures that covid patients are dropped to the nearest hospital in his auto.
Whenever he gets a call, he gets ready to ferry the patient by wearing his personal protective equipment, sanitises his auto.
He also has a thermometer and a pulse oximeter handy. In the mid of April this year, he helped ferry a number of people.
He says, “After the pandemic, I will keep running the auto from 10 pm to 5 am for covid patients free of cost,” as reported by India Today.
While people, in this horrendous time, are battling not just for their lives, but also for their livelihoods, it is noble souls like Dattatreya, who redefine the concept of altruism.
Auto driver in Ranchi gives free rides:
An auto driver from Ranchi has come out in the open to offer free rides to anybody who needs it.
So what prodded him to do the needful?
Well, last month, a woman who wanted a ride to the hospital did not find anyone as auto drivers did not honour her request, fearing covid spread.
He says, "I am doing this since April 15 when I dropped a woman at RIMS after everyone else refused. My number is on social media so people can contact me," as quoted by ANI.
