A Delhi court has fined Shashi Tharoor a sum of Rs 5000 for repeated non-appearance in the court over a defamation case.
Bengaluru: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has never minced words in criticising Hindutva.
Sometimes, in his hurry to issue diatribes, he comes up with terrible comparisons, only to invite the wrath of the ones at whom it is intended.
One such metaphor which he used was the “Scorpion sitting on Shivling” to describe PM Narendra Modi.
Taking umbrage at this statement, BJP leader Rajiv Babbar had filed a case of defamation.
And in spite of the court asking the senior leader to appear begore it, Tharoor has not bothered to honour the court summons.
Therefore, a Delhi court has now slapped a fine of Rs 5000 on Shashi Tharoor his recidivistic attitude of not appearing before the court.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vishal Pahuja strongly directed Tharoor to appear before the court on the next date of hearing on 4 March.
More on the “Scorpion sitting on Shivling” comparison:
Speaking at the Bengaluru Literature Festival in the year 2018, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor had called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “scorpion sitting on a Shivling”, quoting an unnamed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) source.
“There is an extraordinarily striking metaphor expressed by an unnamed RSS source to a journalist that ‘Modi is like a scorpion sitting on a Shivling; you can’t remove him with your hand and you cannot hit it with a chappal either’,” said Tharoor.

The Congress MP was referring to a piece, ‘The Emperor Uncrowned’ published in The Caravan magazine where an unnamed RSS leader used this metaphor.
Tharoor was in Bangalore then to promote his new book The Paradoxical Prime Minister: Narendra Modi and His India.
Though Shashi Tharoor keeps targeting the PM and Hindutva, it is in places like Jamia Millia where he gets to taste real intolerance.
Also, when he had expressed his displeasure over Islamic fanaticism entering the anti-CAA protests, he had received backlash on social media.
