Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh visit Chidambaram in Tihar jail

Former Union finance minister P Chidamabram was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 21 in Delhi and is currently in Tihar jail. 
                    

New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh set foot in Tihar jail to meet former Union minister P Chidambaram on Monday (September 23).
 
Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram also arrived at the jail to meet his father. 

Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI on August 21 and is at present in judicial custody in Tihar Jail. Chidambaram was arrested from his Jor Bagh residence in connection with the INX media money laundering case.

The CBI registered an FIR on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs 305 crore in 2007 during Chidambaram's tenure as finance minister.
Thereafter, the ED lodged a money laundering case in this regard in 2017.

INX Media had sought FIPB clearances on March 13, 2007, for permission to issue, by way of preferential allotment, up to 14.98 equity shares to three non-resident entities - Dunearn, NSR PE and New Vernon Pvt Equity Ltd.

A Delhi court on Thursday (September 19) extended Chidambaram's judicial custody till October 3 in the corruption case filed by the CBI.
