A case of Christian girl forced  to convert to Islam has been reported in Kerala. Following this, National Minority Commission (NMC) vice chairman George Kurian wrote to Union home minister Amit Shah on the need to take action against cases of love jihad.

Kozhikode: National Minority Commission (NMC) vice chairman George Kurian wrote to Union home minister Amit Shah on the need for action on the rising incidents of love jihad in Kerala.

Kurian issued a statement saying, “The spate in organised religious conversion and using the victims for terror activities by trapping them through ‘love jihad’ has shown that the Christian community is a soft target for Islamic radicals.”

The statement was issued following a case of forcible conversion filed at the Nadakavu police station in Kerala by the parents of a 19-year-old Christian girl against a 19-year-old man, accusing him also of sexual abuse.

According to reports, the complaint claims that the girl was a classmate of the accused Jasim in the coaching centre in Kozhikode. Both had met accidentally on July 7 when the victim along with her two friends had visited Sarovaram Bio Theme Park.

The complaint also states that the accused drugged the victim, sexually abused her and recorded a video of the same. Then he forced her to convert to Islam, and threatened to leak the video online if she did not budge.

The statement of the girl has been recorded by the police before the magistrate.

The parents of the victim have alleged that the cops are trying to protect the accused.

The victim's parents also filed a complaint with the National Minority vice chairman George Kurian. Kurian has sought the intervention of National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the matter.

It can be noted that the NIA has dealt with 11 cases with regard to forcible conversion. NIA is also in charge of 89 cases with regard to inter-caste marriages including that of Hadia.

Following a march, NMC along with BJP stated a protest in front of Kozhikode Commissioner's office on September 23.

CPI(M) led-government is shielding the accused, alleged Kurian.

Earlier, during a debate, former chief minister of Kerala Oommen Chandy had said that between 2006 and 2012, a total of 7713 persons were converted to Islam.

According to the data published by the Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference’s Commission for Social Harmony and Vigilance, around 4,000 girls have been subjected to conversion since 2005 till 2012 in the form of love jihad.
