Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby from England on Tuesday concluded his India tour with a visit to Jallianwala Bagh memorial in Amritsar. He was accompanied by his wife Caroline Welby.
Amritsar: The Archbishop of Canterbury, United Kingdom, Justin Portal Welby, reached Amritsar on September 9. The Archbishop visited the Jallianwala Bagh to pay his tribute to the martyrs. He was accompanied by his wife Caroline Welby. The Archbishop received warm welcome at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport amid Punjabi dhol beats.
He paid his respects at the memorial and said, “I cannot speak for the British government and I am not an official of the British government, but I can speak on the name of Christ. It is a place for sin and redemption. Because you have remembered what they have done and their name will remain etched, their memory will linger on.”
“I am so ashamed and sorry for the impact of this crime committed here. I can’t speak for the government. That is for the government to do. I am a religious leader, not a politician. As a religious leader, I mourn the tragedy I see here,” said Welby.
