Bakrid 2019: Tamil Nadu, Puducherry leaders extend Eid-ul-Adha wishes to Muslims

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Sunday (August 11) led the state in conveying greetings on the eve of Eid-ul-Adha, also called Bakrid.

In his greetings, Purohit said the day marks the ultimate sacrifice done by a devout father in obedience to the will of God.

"The festival thus celebrates the need for total submission of one's thoughts and deeds to the will of God Almighty," Purohit said in his greeting.

Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, quoting verses from Islam's holy book 'Quran', urged the people to imbibe the spirit of love, peace, humanity, virtue and unity on the auspicious day.

"I wish happy Bakrid to the people of Islam...This day is celebrated to appreciate the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim who was ready to offer his only son to show his dedication to God," he said.

DMK president and leader of the opposition MK Stalin said, "This is a day that reminds us about the saying that true pleasure comes from performing one's duty."

"I am happy that this day is celebrated by Muslims who are examples of humanity, sacrifice and compassion towards the poor. I convey my wishes," he said.

AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran, MDMK chief Vaiko and PMK leader S Ramadoss among others also extended their greetings.

Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi and chief minister V Narayanasamy too on Sunday extended greetings to the Islamic community on the eve of Bakrid (Eid-ul-Adha).

In her message, the Lieutenant Governor said, “Bakrid is the festival of sacrifice marking the completion of a holy pilgrimage which signifies the spiritual growth of an individual for leading a disciplined life.”

She said, "On the happy occasion of the festival I extend my hearty greetings and best wishes to the Muslim brethren and to the people of the Union Territory of Puducherry."

Highlighting the importance of the festival, the chief minister Narayanasamy said the festival is an occasion for nurturing love and sacrifice.

He said although the Central government had discontinued the grant to those proceeding on Haj pilgrimage, the Puducherry government had provided the assistance to 84 pilgrims from out of the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
