Prime Minister Narendra Modi had once criticised the Congress of delaying the Ayodhya verdict.

Bengaluru: The whole nation rejoices and heaves a sigh of collective relief as the sensitive Ayodhya case is brought to its logical end.

But the path leading to the verdict was fraught with impediments and obstacles with a view to delaying the verdict, allegedly by the Congress.

In the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s own words, he had said in 2018, “If a supreme court judge does not prepare the time-table (for hearing cases) as per their (Congress's) political intentions and wants to hear all to deliver justice on a serious and sensitive issue, such as Ayodhya, then the party's lawyers, who are Rajya Sabha members, start the game of scaring the judges in the name of impeachment."

The reference was to Kapil Sibal who had allegedly said in 2018 that the supreme court must start haring the case only after the Lok Sabha polls 2019 had been completed.
There were talks that the then CJI Dipak Mishra would be impeached.

It wasn’t just the prime minister who took a dig at the Congress. Even Subramanian Swamy, a BJP Rajya Sabha member, in no uncertain terms, had criticised Kapil Sibal for his take on the issue.

He had said, “ He (Sibal) just gave his arguments on the political level, as they will lose the elections if they lose this case. Kapil Sibal presented the view that this judgment would affect 2019 elections, which is why the verdict should be delayed till then. He tried to give political limelight to the case. They put many efforts to delay the hearing of the case.”

The supreme court, in a historic judgment awarded the disputed land of 2.77 acres to the Hindus, while asking the centre to set up a board of trustees to look into the issue of temple construction.

The top court also awarded 5 acres of land to Muslims in Ayodhya. Either the UP government of the centre has to award the land.
