Punjab farmers have been staging protests for a week ever since the bills were passed in Lok Sabha
New Delhi: The government on Sunday introduced three bills related to the farm sector amidst protest from the opposition parties.
The Opposition claimed the government did not have the numbers and to cover it up, all rules were violated.
The Opposition, which lacked the numbers to block the bills, had demanded that the bills be sent to a select committee for further discussion. The Opposition parties demanded a physical voting, pointing out that they were sitting in parliament. When the Chair refused, they rushed to the Well of the House, tore up the rule book and tried to snatch off the Deputy Chairman's microphone.
Meanwhile, outside Rajya Sabha, farmers across several states are up in arms against the three contentious farm-sector bills tabled by the government in Parliament -- Farmers' Produce Trade And Commerce (Promotion And Facilitation) Bill; The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill; and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill.
As farmers from Punjab led by the state's Youth Congress unit attempted to break the barricades on Ambala-Mohali highway near the Punjab-Haryana border this afternoon amid protests against controversial farm bills, which cleared parliament today, police resorted to use of force and water cannons in an attempt to disperse them.
Farmers in Punjab and Haryana have been protesting over the new legislation ever since the bills cleared Lok Sabha earlier this week.
Prime Minister Modi took to Twitter to pacify the agitated farmers and tweeted in Punjabi to reach out to the masses.
ਭਾਰਤ ਦੇ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੱਜ ਵੱਡਾ ਦਿਨ ਹੈ। ਸੰਸਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਹਿਮ ਬਿਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਹੋਣ 'ਤੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਮਿਹਨਤੀ ਕਿਸਾਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਈਆਂਂ। ਇਹ ਨਾ ਕੇਵਲ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁਕੰਮਲ ਪਰਿਵਰਤਨ ਲਿਆਉਣਗੇ ਬਲਕਿ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਸਸ਼ਕਤ ਵੀ ਹੋਣਗੇ।

Both the agriculture bills were passed by voice vote and amendments moved by the opposition parties were rejected.
