We owe our existence to our parents. On twitter, there is a widespread call to worship our parents on February 14. Let’s take a moment out to remember the contributions of our parents in our lives.

Bengaluru: February 14 is celebrated as Valentine’s Day which celebrates the wonderful concept of love.

Generally, this love is understood to be the love couples share. However, in a deeper meaning, this love can also extend itself to the love our parents give us.
As we write this article, #14FebDayToWorshipParents was trending on twitter. So let’s take a moment to remember the roles played by our parents in our lives and also understand how high a position they deserve.

In Sanskrit, there are two statements which emphatically elevate the positions of our parents.

They are: मातृ देवो भव। पितृ देवो भव।

These statements are riveting in the sense that it is the parents who are literally instrumental in getting a child to this world. From the moment of conception to the point a child can take care of itself, it is the parents who struggle hard to ensure it doesn’t face troubles.

In Hinduism, there is a concept called “Pitr Rin” which roughly translated into English means a sort of loan or indebtedness that we owe to our parents.

That is why when a child grows into an adult, it is a bounden duty upon them to take care of their parents, be a part of their old lives, and strive to alleviate and ameliorate their problems, thereby, ensuring they have a life free of obstacles.

The concept of “Rin” can also be extended to our motherland. Another interesting Sanskrit aphorism that lays importance on this fact is:

जननी जन्मभूमिश्च स्वर्गादपि गरीयसी

When translated into English, it means: Mother and motherland are greater than heaven.

The concept of attributing values such as motherhood to a nation only increases the love one has for one’s country.

As per twitter users, former CMs have openly batted for worshipping of parents as they are living embodiments of divine traits and tenets.
