New Delhi: Former finance minister Arun Jaitley was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi this morning.
Arun Jaitley was admitted to AIIMS's cardiology department for a medical check-up after he complained of breathing problems.
66-year-old Arun Jaitley's health is being monitored by a team comprising an endocrinologist, nephrologist and cardiologist. Union health minister Harshvardhan visited AIIMS on Friday evening to check up on Arun Jaitley.
Arun Jaitley has been unwell for the past two years. Last year, he took a three-month sabbatical to undergo a kidney transplant, following which he was put under isolation.
Earlier, in 2014 too, Arun Jaitley underwent bariatric surgery to correct the weight he had gained because of a long-standing diabetic condition.
Arun Jaitley served as the finance minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first term in office. Last year, when he went on a sabbatical to undergo a kidney transplant, Piyush Goyal stepped in as the interim finance minister and presented the Modi government’s Interim Budget in February in Arun Jaitley's absence. Arun Jaitley returned to work in August 2018.
In 2019, he flew to the United States for medical attention. After the Bharatiya Janata Party returned to power with a thumping majority in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Arun Jaitley wrote to PM Narendra Modi and told him that he'd like to stay away from "any responsibility" on account of his ill health.
