Cabinet approved the construction of 3 new semiconductors in India. This will create thousands of new jobs and the construction will start in the next 100 days.
India is getting 3 more semiconductor units under the programme for “Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystems in India”. The decision was made final by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the construction of the units is ready to start in the upcoming 100 days. The programme was first announced in December 2021, with an overall budget of Rs. 76,000 crore.
The approval comes with many new job opportunities for the locals and is estimated to provide 20,000 advanced technology jobs and 60,000 indirect jobs. The units are expected to generate jobs in different sectors such as electronics manufacturing, telecommunications, industrial manufacturing, and many other industries that utilise semiconductors.
Three locations have been picked for the construction of the units and the following are the details about the semiconductors and their locations:
1. Semiconductor Fab (Dholera, Gujarat)This is India’s first commercial semiconductor which will be constructed in Dholera, Gujarat by partnering with Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC), Taiwan. The budget for this unit is set at around Rs 91,000 and the capacity of the semiconductor will be 50,000 wafer starts per month (WSPM).
2. Semiconductor ATMP (Sanand, Gujarat)The unit is CG-powered and will be built in collaboration with Renesas Electronics Corporation, Japan and Stars Microelectronics, Thailand. The investment in this unit will be Rs. 7,600 crore. The unit will be helpful in the production of chips, industrial automotive, and power appliances. It will have a capacity of 15 million per day.
3. Semiconductor ATMP (Morigaon, Assam)The semiconductor is under the partnership of Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT). The budget of this unit is Rs. 27,000 crore. It will be used for manufacturing automotive, electrical vehicles, consumer electronics, mobile phones, and much more. It has a capacity of 48 million per day.
The construction of these semiconductors will push India ahead in the race for development and will also create thousands of job opportunities all over the country. It is an excellent beginning to a strong, self-sustaining economy.
