Bengaluru: Union home minister Amit Shah was at his fiery best as he took on West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee in a virtual meet titled West Bengal Jan Samvad.

The Union home minister wondered why Mamata was not implementing Ayushman Bharat scheme.

“I and the people of Bengal want to ask you this, why are you not letting it get implemented?” Shah questioned.

“Mamata ji, do poor people of Bengal have no right to receive free and quality medical aid? Why is Ayushman Bharat scheme not allowed here? Mamata Ji, political games should not be played with the rights of poor people,”

He also took a jibe at her for calling Shramik trains as ‘Corona Express’.

He said, “The name ‘Corona Express’ that you have given, Mamata didi, will become your exit route. You’ve added salt to the wounds of the migrant workers and they will not forget this.”

It is very interesting to recall that Mamata did not like centre sending teams from the centre to assist the state in dealing with the pandemic.

Instead of being thankful to the centre, Mamata took umbrage and played politics by saying Bengal had been nitpicked as it was a non-BJP state and added that BJP wanted to portray TMC in a bad light as it would go to polls next year.

Mamata had also accused the centre of taking a unilateral decision in sending the team. But sources had said that the centre had shot back saying that the team had been deputed under the authority conferred on the central government under Section 35 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which in turn authorises the centre to take all such measures.

It had also reminded the state of the Supreme Court order passed on 31 March, 2020, where states have been asked to "comply with the directives and orders issued by the Union of India in letter and spirit in the interest of public safety."
