New Delhi: The Opposition tasted its own bitter medicine on Wednesday when the Election Commission banned the release of the trailer of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s biopic ‘Baghini, the Bengal Tigress’.

A request to ban the release of the trailer was made by the Communist Party of India (CPI) (Marxist) after they met official so the election watchdog.

While the CPM has argued that this could influence the voters in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, movie’s producer Nihal Dutta said it was not a biopic of the chief minister, rather the tale of women’s struggles. He said the movie represented how a woman from an ordinary background could become one of the most important figures of the country, he added.
Despite such claims of the producers, the movie reportedly has shown several political moments from the life of the West Bengal chief minister, such as Singur etc.
Earlier, the biopic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was banned from being released during the elections. The matter is sub judice with the Supreme Court as the commission has submitted its report to the SC after watching the movie and had made its recommendations.
