Astronauts Sunita Williams and Josh Cassada have been stranded in space since June 6th due to technical issues with the Starliner spacecraft. Their return is uncertain, and NASA is exploring options for a safe return.

Astronauts stranded since June 6th

Astronauts Sunita Williams and Josh Cassada have been stranded in space since June 6th, hoping to return to Earth. However, their return remains uncertain. The spacecraft they used to travel to space cannot return, and NASA has clarified that attempting to bring the spacecraft back poses a risk to the lives of both astronauts.

Journey to space aboard Starliner

On June 5th, both astronauts embarked on a journey to space aboard the Starliner, a joint mission by the American aircraft company Boeing and NASA. While Starliner successfully transported them, initial technical difficulties prevented its return, leaving the astronauts stranded.

96 hours of oxygen and Starliner's risky return

NASA is working to bring the astronauts back but has limited options due to the risks associated with Starliner's return. They are reviewing backup plans as the Starliner only has 96 hours of oxygen. Any deviation during re-entry could lead to extra days in space, risking the astronauts' lives. Additionally, an incorrect entry angle into Earth's atmosphere could incinerate the spacecraft.

Currently safe in space

According to NASA, Sunita Williams and Josh Cassada are safe inside Starliner. They have the means to generate the necessary oxygen and are receiving essential supplies via cargo crafts.

The last resort

NASA's last resort is SpaceX's Crew-9 Dragon mission, initially planned to send four astronauts to space. If all else fails, only two astronauts will embark on Crew-9, and Sunita Williams and her fellow astronaut will return with them during the mission's return. This option has postponed the Crew-Dragon mission to September 24th. If NASA chooses this option, Sunita Williams and her colleague's return is expected in February 2025.
