The British, intending to establish a train service to the Nilgiris, laid rack and pinion tracks up to Coonoor in 1890. The steam-powered train made its maiden journey in 1899. This scenic mountain train invites passengers to appreciate the beauty of the Western Ghats and currently operates between Mettupalayam and Ooty, covering a distance of 46.61 km.

It takes approximately 5 hours to cover the 46 km distance from Mettupalayam to Ooty, while the return journey from Ooty to Mettupalayam is completed in about 3 hours and 30 minutes.
The train, known as the Nilgiri Mountain Express, travels from Mettupalayam to Ooty, passing through Kallar, Coonoor, Wellington, and Walden. This mountain railway line is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Notably, the song "Chaiya Chaiya" from the film Dil Se was filmed on this picturesque mountain train.
