During the monsoon, moisture in the environment can lead to spoilage of dry fruits and nuts. Here’s how you can keep your dry fruits fresh and preserved for a longer period.

Dry fruits and nuts are used in a variety of dishes and are also enjoyed as healthy snacks. However, during the rainy season, moisture can cause them to spoil and become damp. To prevent this and maintain their flavour, it's important to store them properly. Here’s how you can keep your dry fruits fresh and preserved for a longer period.

Why do dry fruits spoil in monsoon?

Dry fruits contain healthy fats that can oxidize when exposed to moisture. If left out in the open, these fats break down due to exposure to air, light, and heat, leading to spoilage of taste and texture. During the monsoon, moisture in the environment can lead to spoilage of dry fruits, nuts, and various other food items too.

How to store dry fruits?

Keeping them in the freezer is an excellent option to keep them fresh, as it provides a cool environment. Without exposure to air, light, or heat, oxidation is prevented, keeping the dry fruits and nuts fresh for a longer period. Since nuts contain less moisture than fruits and vegetables, they are less prone to spoilage in the freezer. However, ensure that dry fruits are not stored near strong-smelling items like onions and garlic.

To use dry fruits stored in the freezer, let them sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to regain their original texture. You can also soak them in hot water for a while before use.
