Easy and Delicious Dal Chawal Recipe for a Comforting Meal

Dal Chawal is a beloved and comforting Indian meal made with lentils (dal) and rice (chawal). This nutritious and hearty dish is a staple in many Indian households due to its simplicity, delicious flavour, and the ease with which it can be prepared. For all the busy bees, here’s a simple recipe for making dal chawal on your own. 

Ingredients you need:

•    Masoor dal (red lentils)
•    1 finely chopped onion
•    1 chopped tomato
•    1 chopped green chilli
•    1 tablespoon ginger garlic paste
•    ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
•    ½ red chilli powder
•    ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
•    ½ teaspoon mustard seeds (optional)
•    1 teaspoon coriander powder
•    ½ teaspoon garam masala
•    Salt to taste
•    Oil
•    Water
•    Fresh coriander leaves
•    1 cup rice

Follow these instructions

Step 1- Rinse 1 cup of red lentils under cold water 3-4 times. 

Step 2- In a pressure cooker, add the washed lentils and 3 cups of water. Cook on medium heat for 3-4 whistles. 

Step 3- For tadka, heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan over medium heat. Add 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds and 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds (optional). Let them sizzle. 

Step 4- Add onion and sauté until golden brown. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for another 2 minutes. Then add tomato and green chilli. 

Step 5- Cook until the tomato becomes soft. Add red chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt to taste. Stir well.

Step 6- Add the cooked dal to the pan with the tadka. Mix well and adjust the consistency with water as needed.

Step 7- Let it simmer for 5-10 minutes to blend the flavours. Add garam masala and cook for 2 more minutes.

Step 8- For preparing rice, wash 1 cup of rice under cold water 3-4 times. 

Step 9- Add washed rice to pressure cooker. Mix one teaspoon of ghee and 2 cups of water. And cook for 3-4 whistles.
