Rajinikanth’s Muthu to be re-released in Japan to celebrate its 20th anniversary

A digitally-enhanced version of the movie would be released in Japan to celebrate its 20th year anniversary after original release in the country

Japan would re-release a digitally enhanced version of Rajinikanth’s Muthu to celebrate the movie’s 20th anniversary. The release is expected to be a grand one. AR Rahman, the music director of the movie, will be working on the enhanced version. 

The screening would take place in Tokyo on November 23. According to reports, 4K and 5.1 surround system would be used to ensure the best visual experience to the fans.  

Muthu-Oduru Maharaja was first released in 1998 and was the first non-Hollywood movie to have received huge recognition in Japan. The movie was dubbed in Japanese and showcased across 30 screens. It received enormous success in the theatres and was labelled as a blockbuster. Till today, Rajini has a wide fan base in Japan because of the movie.

A romantic drama, Muthu is the adaptation of Malayalam movie Thenmavin Kombathu that was written by Priyadarshan and released in 1994. The film is directed by KS Ravikumar, starring Rajinikanth and Meena in lead roles. Sentil, Jayanharathi, Subhashri, Vichitra and Radha Ravi act in supporting roles. It was produced by Rajam Balachander and Pushpa Kandaswamy under Kavithalayaa Productions. In Tamil Nadu, the movie received a 175-day run at theatres and had a massive success at the box office.  

Muthu will be released prior to Rajini’s highly anticipated next, 2.0, which is set to hit screens on November 29. Produced on a massive Rs 450 crore budget, the movie is directed by Shankar and stars Amy Jackson and Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar as the antagonist. The movie is produced by Subaskran Allirajah of Lyca Productions.
