Fact or fiction? Netizens divided over Scindia family's part in Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi

The royal family once ruled in Gwalior and have been shown as spineless in the Kangana Ranaut starrer. Politician Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia is related to the same family and represents the Guna constituency of Madhya Pradesh

Mumbai: While Kangana Ranaut directorial debut, Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, had courted controversy with the Karni Sena much before its release. Three days after hitting the screens, the film has now become a touchy subject for the royal Scindia family. The royal family once ruled in Gwalior and have been shown as spineless in the Kangana Ranaut starrer. Politician Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia of Congress is related to the same family and represents the Guna constituency of Madhya Pradesh

There is a scene in the flick that shows Rani Laxmibai calling out the Maharaja of Gwalior for kowtowing to the British oppressors. "Jo apni maa ka sauda kar de, woh mar chuka hai. Aur main murdo par talwar nahi chalati," says the queen (People who sell their motherland are dead inside and I don't draw my sword to kill the dead).

So much so, the hashtag #DeshdrohiScindia also picked up on social media and netizens are now clamouring for answers.

According to historical facts, during the rebellion of 1857, Jayajirao Scindia remained neutral but also led his forces to Morar to fight a rebel army led by Tatya Tope, Rani Lakshmibai and Rao Sahib. He later fled to Agra. 

Leaving the Twitterati arguing in her wake, Ranaut's magnum opus is on it's the way to making Box Office cash registers ring.  Leaving behind Nawazuddin Siddiqui's Thackeray behind, Manikarnika has emerged as the clear winner at the box office as it collected over Rs 18 crore on Day 2.
