Independent Indian cinema is busy making the nation proud all across the globe. This time, it is Assamese film Xhoihobote Dhemalite (Rainbow Fields), which is making an impact for the right reasons. The film, a semi-autobiographical journey of director Bidyut Kokoty, depicts growing up in times of violence, and opens in the US this Friday.

Based on real-life inspiration, the film features some acclaimed actors as Victor Banerjee, Dipannita Sharma, Nakul Vaid, Naved Aslam, Nipon Goswami and Nikumoni Barua.

"This is perhaps for the first time that an Assamese film is releasing commercially in US," Kotoky told PTI. The movie has also reportedly bagged five nominations at the Treasure Coast International Film Festival and was nominated in the best feature category at Australia's World Film Festival. In 2017, the film won the best foreign film award at the Hollywood International CineFest and was premiered at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Goa.

Kotoky told PTI that while he was struggling for funds for the film's completion, Dubai-based philanthropist Jani Viswanath came on board as an executive producer and also pledged her earning from the film back to Assam via her NGO, Healing Lives.

"The subtle message of the futility of mindless violence that has crept into our mischievous political psyches is the understated theme of the film," actor Victor Banerjee was quoted as saying.
