The bubbly 18-year-old, Alia Bhatt who made her Bollywood debut with Karan Johar’s Student of the Year has turned 26 today. Let us look at her career evolution on her special day.
Bengaluru: On Alia Bhatt's birthday, if we look back at her filmy outings in Bollywood, the actor has evolved from being just a glam doll to a versatile actor.
In her first film Student of The Year (2012), helmed by mentor Karan Johar, she portrayed the role of a rich brat Shanaya Singhania who liked to flaunt her Louis Vuitton bags and dance to peppy Bollywood numbers.
Cut to 2014, Imtiaz Ali's Highway saw her playing the role of a girl (Veera) who, for reasons later revealed, discovers freedom after being kidnapped by Randeep Hooda. A difficult character to sink her teeth into, Alia played a sexual assault victim that won her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress.
The same year she also did 2 States with Arjun Kapoor where she played the role of an IIM student from a conservative Tamil Brahmin family, who fell in love with a Punjabi boy. Critics and audiences loved her work in the movie, and started accepting her as a mature, serious actor who can don any character with ease.
Alia next best performance was Anurag Kashyap's Udta Punjab (2016), which threw her several notches higher in the acting game. Acting opposite Shahid Kapoor, she put her glamorous diva avatar away to ace the role of a Bihari migrant. This movie had transformed Alia from an actor into an artist
Saving the best for last, the recent Raazi (2018), saw Bhatt as a RAW agent named Sehmat, who got married to Iqbal Syed, a military officer of Pakistan add a part of her mission. Raazi became the second film, driven by the female lead, to gross more than ₹ 158 crore net in India, after Kangana Ranaut's Tanu Weds Manu Returns.
The film is an adaptation of Harinder Sikka's novel Calling Sehmat, a true account of an Indian RAW agent.
This year's movie Gully Boy, where Alia plays rapper Ranveer Singh's possessive girlfriend Safeena, was a tough one to crack. Mostly, because though the movie was all about Ranveer's rags-to-riches rap journey, Bhatt managed to make her presence felt.
She will be next be seen in big-budget movies such as Karan Johar's Kalank with Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sanjay Dutt and Brahmastra with Ranbir Singh. She will also mark her debut in the Telugu film industry with Baahubali director SS Rajamouli's RRR alongside superstar Ram Charan and Jr NTR
