Mumbai Police filed an FIR against an unknown individual for circulating a deepfake video of actor Aamir Khan endorsing a political party, citing IPC sections 419, 420, and IT Act provisions

The Mumbai Police initiated a First Information Report (FIR) against an unidentified individual on Wednesday concerning a deepfake video featuring renowned actor Aamir Khan endorsing a political party. An official from the police department confirmed the registration of the FIR, indicating that Khan's office took action by filing a complaint at the Khar Police Station. The complaint cites relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 419 (impersonation), 420 (cheating), along with provisions of the Information Technology Act.

In the manipulated video, lasting approximately 27 seconds, Khan is purportedly heard cautioning against political rhetoric (jumla). The footage, suspected to have undergone alterations through artificial intelligence (AI) technology, has raised concerns over the proliferation of deepfake content and its potential to deceive audiences. The actor's office, reacting promptly to the dissemination of the forged video, has taken legal recourse, urging authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly.
