Vellore: The Lok Sabha election to Vellore constituency in Tamil Nadu has been cancelled following a huge cash haul.

Accepting the recommendation of Election Commission of India (ECI) dated April 14, 2019, the President is pleased to rescind  election to Vellore Parliamentary constituency, Tamil Nadu, to elect a member to Lok Sabha, stated the poll body.

The Election Commission (EC) on Monday had recommended to President Ram Nath Kovind that the polling in the Vellore Lok Sabha constituency in Tamil Nadu be cancelled over suspected use of money power to influence the voters.

Large amount of cash was allegedly seized from DMK candidate Kathir Anand’s office a couple of days ago. An amount of Rs 11.53 crore was also seized from Anand's father Durai Murugan's cement warehouse in Vellore.

Vellore was to go for elections on April 18.

Earlier, though the media had reported that election to Vellore is likely to be cancelled, the ECI had issued a notice stating that no order was issued in this regard.

It can also be noted that Tamil Nadu stands in the second place in seizures of cash and other materials. So far in Tamil Nadu, Rs 202.12 crore cash and Rs 285.89 crore worth materials have been seized.

But however, sources claim that bypoll to Ambur and Gudiyatham in Vellore district have not been cancelled.
