New Delhi: The Sonipat constituency is witnessing a big fight between Indian National Lok Dal supremo Om Prakash Chautala’s grandson Digvijay Chautala and two-time chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who had defeated his great grandfather Devi Lal, thrice from the Rohtak Lok Sabha seat.
Chautala will contest as the Jannayak Janta Party candidate in alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The Sonipat Lok Sabha constituency went for polls on May 12 as part of the sixth phase of the 2019 general elections.
Sitting Member of Parliament Ramesh Chander Kaushik of the BJP is contesting against former chief minister Hooda of the Congress.
In the 2014 general elections, Kaushik defeated Hooda of the Congress with a margin of 7.85% or 77,414 votes.
Hooda has served as the chief minister of Haryana from 2005 to 2014. Prior to that, he served the Rohtak Lok Sabha constituency from 1991 to 1999 and 2004-05.

Sonipat is one of the constituencies in 10-seat Haryana. During 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Sonipat had 1,417,188 registered electors -- 777,824 of them is male and 639,364 female. The constituency had seen a 69.55% voter turnout in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. In Sonipat, the male voter turnout was 70.86% and 67.95% female voters turned out for voting. It is a rural constituency with an approximate literacy rate of 77.69%.
