Frightened Mamata Banerjee stops Amit Shah's chopper to land in Bengal again

The growing importance of the BJP in Bengal over the past few years, and the Narendra Modi government turning the heat on Mamata and her cronies over various scams have clearly left Mamata Banerjee jittery

New Delhi: The BJP on Monday decided to move the Election Commission after party president Amit Shah was denied permission to hold a rally in Bengal’s Jadavpur.

According to reports, Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee again denied permission for Shah’s chopper to land.

BJP media head and Rajya Sabha MP Anil Baluni said that the EC has become a "mute spectator" to the Trinamool’s undemocratic means to target the saffron party. He also said that his party will hold protests and move the EC.

Shah's rally was scheduled for Monday in Jadavpur, which goes to the polls on May 19 in the last phase, but the permission for it was denied at the last minute by the state administration, according to Baluni.

This is not the first time that Shah’s chopper was not allowed to land in Bengal.

Watch: After 'slap' remark, look what Mamata has to say about Modi now

In January 2019, the Mamata government had refused permission to Shah's chopper to land at the Malda airstrip, citing the ground being 'upgraded' as the reason. It happened just a day before the BJP president was scheduled to hold a rally in the state.

The Trinamool chief, earlier this year, also denied permission for Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s chopper to land in Balurghat.

In a statement, the Uttar Pradesh chief minister’s office said that the permission for the February 3 rally was denied without citing reasons.

Mamata is known for her sustained efforts that brought about an end to the 34-year-long misrule of Bengal by the Left Front, but she brooks no opposition herself. The growing importance of the BJP in Bengal over the past few years, and the Narendra Modi government turning the heat on Mamata and her cronies over various scams have clearly left the Trinamool chief jittery.

Perhaps Mamata sees in the BJP a reflection of her Trinamool that overthrew the exploitative Left rule in 2011. She, evidently, has started to fear that the days of the Trinamool in Bengal are numbered.

This explains her abuses for Modi. This explains the repeated obstruction to the proposed rallies of BJP leaders in the state. These are actions of a frightened leader.
