Ajmal leads pack of crorepatis in Assam election

Perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal, who is contesting from Dhubri for a third consecutive time has declared his total assets worth Rs 78,80,67,034 and has emerged the richest candidate this poll season in Assam.

Guwahati: Twelve crorepati candidates are in the fray in the third phase of the Lok Sabha election for four seats in Assam out of 54 candidates.

Among the candidates, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief and sitting MP, the party candidate for Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency, Badruddin Ajmal has emerged as the wealthiest candidate with declared assets worth Rs 78.80 crore.

In the last five years, Badruddin Ajmal’s assets have been increased by over 182%. In 2014, Ajmal declared his assets as being worth Rs 43.27 crore.

Perfume baron Badruddin Ajmal, who is contesting from Dhubri for a third consecutive time has declared his total assets worth Rs 78,80,67,034 out of which movable assets are worth Rs 16,11,49,835 and immovable assets worth Rs 62,69,17,199.

On the other hand, BJP candidate for Gauhati Lok Sabha seat, Queen Ojha has emerged as the second richest candidate with declared assets worth Rs 63.02 crore.

According to an affidavit filed by the BJP candidate and former mayor of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) her total assets are worth Rs 63,02,19,570 with movable assets worth Rs 8,12,97,765 and immovable assets worth Rs 54,89,21,805.

Queen Ojha, who contested in the 2011 Assam assembly elections from Gauhati East assembly constituency on Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) ticket and lost had declared her total assets as being worth Rs 7,52,47,738. In the past eight years, Queen Ojha’s total assets have increased by over 838%.

Congress candidate for Gauhati Lok Sabha seat, Bobbeeta Sharma has declared her total assets as being worth Rs 16,23,99,812 with movable assets worth Rs 3,48,99,812 and immovable assets worth Rs 12.75 crore.

Junmoni Devi Khaund, who is contesting as an Independent candidate has declared her total assets as being worth Rs 34,42,70,772 with movable assets worth Rs 31,69,11,886 and immovable assets worth of Rs 2,73,58,886.

Assam minister and BJP’s ally party Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) candidate for Kokrajhar seat, Pramila Rani Brahma’s total assets have increased by over 240% in last three years.

Pramila Rani Brahma has declared her total assets as being worth Rs 4,47,14,985 with movable assets worth Rs 3,01,14,985 and immovable assets worth Rs 1.46 crore.

Former Congress MLA and the party candidate for Dhubri Lok Sabha seat, Abu Taher Bepari has declared his total assets as being worth Rs 3,73,95,652, and his assets have increased by over 851% in past eight years.

Former Rajya Sabha MP and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidate for Barpeta Lok Sabha seat, Kumar Deepak Das has declared his total assets worth as being worth Rs 2,37,01,000.

On the other hand, sitting MP and Independent candidate for Kokrajhar Lok Sabha seat, Naba Kumar Sarania’s assets have increased by over 603% in the last five years.

Naba Kumar Sarania has declared his total assets as being worth Rs 1,30,13,994.

Other crorepati candidates in Assam are – Upamanyu Hazarika (Independent candidate for Gauhati seat), Pankaj Das (Swarna Bharat Party candidate for Gauhati seat), Urkhao Gwra Brahma (United Peoples Party, Liberal candidate for Kokrajhar seat), Zabed Islam (AGP candidate for Dhubri seat).

In the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections held on April 11, 78.27% voter turnout was recorded and in the second phase 81.20% voter turnout was recorded. 

The third phase of the Lok Sabha elections will be held on April 23 in four Lok Sabha constituencies - Gauhati, Barpeta, Dhubri and Kokrajhar.
