Earlier, the Election Commission's spokesperson Sheyphali Sharan had said, “Once the model code of conduct comes in force, the Commission will take the strictest action in such cases, if the instructions are violated.”

This was when political banners bearing Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman's portrait along with the photographs of Prime Minister Narendra Modi were clicked and circulated on social media. The Congress and many of its leaders were in the forefront to cry foul. But now the tables have turned.

Twitteratis have taken to the micro-blogging site asking for action against Matondkar.

Earlier, the Election Commission had explicitly instructed that, "The Commission is of the view that photographs of chief of army staff or any other defence personnel and photographs of functions of defence forces should not be associated with or used in any manner in advertisement/propaganda/campaigning or in any other manner in connection with elections by political parties and candidates".
