Aizawl: India’s second least populated state Mizoram is the last Congress bastion in the northeast and now the question is: Will Congress be able to retain it after the upcoming Assembly elections?

While BJP president Amit Shah kick starts election campaign in Mizoram, Assam finance minister of BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) convenor Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, on Wednesday, said that the party is only focusing on organisation building in Mizoram and not on government formation.

While talking to media in Guwahati, Sarma, who is also BJP's in charge for Mizoram elections, said that in Mizoram BJP has very limited space.

“We are working in Mizoram with a very limited space and let us see how much seats we get four, five or six and that is our whole estimate,” Himanta said.

However, Shah recently said that the people of the Christian majority Mizoram will celebrate Christmas this December under the BJP rule.

Talking about any possible tie-up with Congress in Mizoram to form the government, Sarma said that the Congress party in the state has a different constitution and they are not similar to the Congress party in Delhi.

“So as we are concerned about the situation after the elections, it depends on how much seats we will get. We are not a big party in Mizoram. We are contesting in limited seats. Depending on our results, we can discuss with them. I think that Mizoram elections will be mainly between two major parties, Congress and Mizo National Front (MNF). We are trying to increase our vote percentage. For the first time, we have put 40 candidates in Mizoram. For BJP, it is more important for organisation building in Mizoram,” the NEDA convenor said.

He further added that his party’s main aim right now is not the formation of the government.

“We are not discussing the formation of the government. We don’t know, how the election will be. Let us see. But, as of now, the first priority in Mizoram is that we should have candidates and booth committees all over the state. So our focus on Mizoram is completely different,” Sarma said.

Mizoram is scheduled to go for the election on November 28.
