Close to 150 nominations in Telangana have been rejected after scrutiny. This brings the number of valid nominations to 503.
Telangana: The election officials have rejected as many as 143 nominations for 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana. Out of 646 candidates, 143 were rejected and 503 were found valid.
The Telangana Election Commission said that Nizamabad topped the maximum valid nominations with 189, followed by Nalgonda with 31 and Khammam with 29. Hyderabad had 19 valid nominations and Secunderabad had 30.
The last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 28.
Malkajgiri constituency has the maximum percentage of rejected nominations, where 27 nominations were rejected out of the 40 nominations that were filed. followed by Secunderabad with the rejection of 21 nominations.
In Nizamabad, 245 nominations, over 200 of them by farmers were filed protesting the alleged failure of the ruling TRS to ensure minimum support price for turmeric and red jowar (sorghum) produce.
Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's daughter K Kavitha is seeking re-election from Nizamabad constituency.
The TRS has been at the receiving end of farmers’ agitation recently which lead K Kavitha to say that the BJP has not done anything for farmers.
The BJP was quick to respond to allegations levelled against them and said that the manifesto will include farmer issues.
The Election Commission will be conducting ballot voting in Nizamabad constituency because of the large number of nominations filed.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Rajat Kumar had earlier said that the EC will conduct ballot voting if there are more than 64 candidates in one Lok Sabha constituency. He also stated that the EC is ready with 194 election symbols and would provide more.
Telangana will go to polls on April 11 with 10 registered parties and 94 unregistered parties.
The Election Commission has identified 6,440 critical polling stations in the state and 25,000 security personnel from the armed forces and police will be deployed.
