Mahashivratri

Mahashivratri is celebrated annually on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Falgun. This is the most significant festival for devotees, marking the day when Lord Shiva is believed to have manifested as Jyotirlinga, according to the Shiva Purana. The festival typically falls in February or March in the Gregorian calendar. In some regions, Mahashivratri is also observed as the celebration of the marriage between Shiva and Parvati.

Masik Shivratri

Shivratri is observed every month, known as Masik Shivratri. To worship Lord Shiva, a fast is observed on the Chaturdashi Tithi of Krishna Paksha each month, which is referred to as Masik Shivratri or Shiv Chaturdashi. Mahashivratri is celebrated on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha in the Falgun month, and Masik Shivratri is observed on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha in the remaining eleven months.

When is Sawan Shivratri?

Sawan Shivratri is special because Sawan is a month dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. Shivratri fast is observed on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha each month, the one during Sawan is considered more significant. This is because the Shiv Puja performed in Sawan is believed to yield more auspicious results compared to worship in other months. In 2024, Sawan Shivratri will be celebrated on August 2, Friday.
