Manchester: Afghanistan’s star spinner Rashid Khan had a forgettable day as he was plundered for more than 100 runs during his nine-over spell against England at the ICC World Cup 2019 on Tuesday (June 18).

While Rashid became the owner of a dubious record for conceding the most number of runs by a bowler in World Cup history, England captain Eoin Morgan has thrown his weight behind the youngster.

Rashid has enjoyed roaring success in the Twenty20 format across the globe. He has been highly successful in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). But, at Old Trafford, against the hosts, he was taken to the cleaners, giving away 110 runs for no wicket in nine overs.

The 20-year-old leg-spinner’s spell was the second costliest in the history of One Day Internationals (ODIs). He conceded 11 sixes with Morgan alone hitting seven. It was Morgan’s day as he blasted a world record 17 sixes in his stupendous 71-ball 148.

After England posted their World Cup record 397/6 in 50 overs, the opposition could manage 247/8 in 50 overs to surrender by 150 runs.

On social media, Rashid was targeted by trolls. However, Morgan backed the bowler and said he had no plan to pick Rashid for big-hitting.

When asked whether it was a deliberate ploy to attack Rashid, Morgan explained, “It certainly wasn't deliberate. We don't go into any game with any preconceived ideas about how guys can play, because anybody can have a bad day. He's obviously a very, very good bowler, and we've experienced that before. He's performed extremely well for a long period.”

He added, “But like all good players, you know, it's when you — you probably learn the most about yourself when your backs are against the wall, and it's probably the same case.”

Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar had picked Rashid among the three players to watch out for at the World Cup 2019. Tendulkar said he was looking forward to see Rashid, Jofra Archer of England and Australia’s David Warner.

Tendulkar had advised Rashid to treat all the World Cup matches as Tests and use attacking fields.
