Manchester: India captain Virat Kohli continues to shatter records at the international level. On Thursday (June 27), he eclipsed another mark held by batting legends Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara.

When Kohli scored his 37th run during the India-West Indies match at the ICC World Cup 2019 match in Manchester today, the right-hander became the quickest to 20,000 runs in international cricket. He reached the landmark in the 25th over of the innings, off the bowling of Jason Holder.

The 30-year-old took 417 (131 Test innings, 224 ODI innings, 62 T20I innings) visits to the crease, across formats, to reach the landmark. The previous best was Tendulkar and Lara, who took 453 innings to the milestone. He is the 12th to the landmark and third Indian after Tendulkar (34,357 runs) and Rahul Dravid (24,208 runs).

So far Kohli has played 77 Tests, 232 ODIs and 67 T20Is. It is not new for Kohli to break records. He is currently the number one ODI batsman in the world and day and day out he proves that. He has made it a habit to score runs across the three formats.

Against Pakistan on June 16, Kohli had become the quickest to reach the 11,000-run mark in ODIs. He got there in 222 innings, 54 less than Tendulkar, who held the previous record.

Kohli, who made his international debut, in an ODI, against Sri Lanka in August, 2008, has so far shattered several records in both limited-overs and Test cricket. He is leading India for the first time at the senior World Cup. Earlier, in 2008, he had led the Under-19 team to World Cup glory.

In the ongoing World Cup he has scores of 18 (against South Africa), 82 (Australia), 77 (Pakistan) and 67 (Afghanistan) as India remain unbeaten in the 10-team tournament. India are one of the favourites to win the World Cup 2019. If the ‘men in blue’ win against West Indies, they are almost assured of a semi-final berth.

Kohli's runs across formats

77 Tests - 6,613 runs

232 ODIs - 11,124 runs (as on Kohli batting on 37 vs West Indies)

67 T20Is - 2,263 runs
