New Delhi: India opener Rohit Sharma completed 8,000 runs in ODIs and in the process became the third joint-fastest to the milestone, during the fifth and final match of the series against Australia on Wednesday night.

Starting the match at the Feroz Shah Kotla needing 46 to reach the 8,000-run mark, the Mumbai right-hander got there with a single off Nathan Lyon.

He brought up his 41st half century later as India were in pursuit of 273 in the series decider. He fell for 56, stumped by Alex Carey off leg-spinner Adam Zampa. India lost the match by 35 runs.

Rohit completed 8,000 ODI runs in his 200th innings, joint-fastest to the mark along with former captain Sourav Ganguly, and behind South Africa's AB de Villiers and India skipper Virat Kohli.

Overall, Rohit is the ninth Indian batsman in the elite club, after Kohli, Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Azharuddin.

The 31-year-old Rohit made his ODI debut against Ireland in June 2007. Since then he has played 206 matches and has amassed 8,010 runs with 22 hundreds and 41 fifties.

Rohit is one of the best ODI batsmen and is the only one to have scored three double centuries in the format. His highest score is 264 against Sri Lanka in November 2014 in Kolkata. His other two 200-plus knocks are 209 (vs Australia, November 2013, Bengaluru) and 208 (vs Sri Lanka, December 2017, Mohali).

Despite being a big hit in the 50-over format, Rohit has often struggled in Tests. So far he has featured in only 27 matches and is not a certainty in the five-day format for India.

The ODI in Delhi on Wednesday was the last for India before the World Cup 2019 which starts in England on May 30.
