Bengaluru: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly turned 47 today (July 8). Cricketers and fans took to social media to convey their wishes to the ‘Prince of Calcutta’.

Ganguly, who is one of the finest leaders in Indian cricket, is often credited with turning the fortunes of Indian team while playing abroad. He and John Wright were instrumental in helping India win Tests overseas.

Not only was Ganguly a fine captain, he also groomed youngsters like Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Mohammad Kaif and others.

Now, Ganguly is the president of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). Also, he is part of the TV commentary panel. Recently, he was seen commentating on India’s matches at the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019 in England and Wales.

Ganguly played 113 Tests and 311 ODIs for India. He led India to World Cup 2003 final in South Africa where they lost to Australia. Also, under his leadership, India were runners-up at the ICC Knockout tournament in 2000.

In Test cricket, Ganguly-led India halted Australia's 16-match winning streak in Kolkata in 2001. The match is famous for VVS Laxman's epic 281.

India paceman Ishant Sharma took to Twitter to wish Ganguly. He wrote, “Happy birthday dada!!!! You have been the greatest pillar to Indian cricket!!! Thanks for your guidance towards everything!!! A true legend who has made some golden memories 🙏🙏🙏 May god shower lots of blessings and love! @SGanguly99 (sic).”
