CPL 2019: Andre Russell suffers blow on helmet, stretchered off ground

Kingston (Jamaica): West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell was hit on the helmet and had to be stretchered off the ground during a Caribbean Premier League (CPL) match at Sabina Park here on Thursday (September 12).

Russell, playing for Jamaica Tallawahs, against St Lucia Zouks, was hit on the helmet by a Hardus Viljoen (South Africa) bouncer.

The right-handed batsman attempted a pull shot and could not make connection. He was hit on the helmet near the right ear. At the time, he was on zero of three balls.

Russell fell to the ground and was attended by Zouks fielders. His helmet was removed and later he stood up and began to walk back to the pavilion. However, he was stopped and a stretcher was called in.

With a neck brace, Russell was stretchered off the ground. The incident happened in the 14th over of the Tallawahs innings.

The official Twitter handle of CPL wrote, “Andre Russell has gone to hospital for a scan. He left the field on a stretcher earlier having been hit on the head by a bouncer.”

The 31-year-old Russell was taken to a hospital for a CT scan. Later, he was cleared of any serious injury. He has been advised rest.

Tallawahs scored 170/5 in 20 overs and the Zouks successfully chased down the target in 16.4 overs. Rahkeem Cornwall was the Man-of-the-match for his blistering 30-ball 75 with four fours and eight sixes.
