In a bid to provide economic security and welfare benefits to workers in the unorganized sector, the Narendra Modi government launched the E-Shram Card scheme in 2020. Understanding the E-Shram Card Scheme: The E-Shram Card scheme is designed to cater to workers aged between 16 to 59 years who are employed in the unorganized sector. This includes individuals working in diverse fields such as retail, transportation, construction, agriculture, and small-scale industries. The scheme recognizes the significant contribution of these workers to the Indian economy and seeks to provide them with much-needed financial stability and social security.

Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible for the E-Shram Card, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Age: Between 16 to 59 years
     
  • Employment: Engaged in the unorganized sector
     
  • Occupation: Includes shopkeepers, drivers, delivery personnel, labourers, artisans, and other informal workers
     
  • Citizenship: Must be a citizen of India

Key Benefits of the E-Shram Card: The E-Shram Card offers a plethora of benefits to registered individuals, including:

  1. Accident Insurance Cover: Upon registration on the E-Shram portal, workers receive accident insurance coverage of up to Rs 2 lakh. This provides financial assistance in the event of accidental injuries or fatalities while on duty.
     
  2. Access to Government Schemes: E-Shram Cardholders can avail themselves of various government schemes aimed at providing social security and welfare benefits. These include:
    • Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan Yojana
       
    • National Pension Scheme (NPS) and Atal Pension Scheme (APS) for self-employed individuals
       
    • Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) for insurance coverage
       
    • Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) for affordable housing
       
    • National Social Assistance Scheme (NSAP) and Ayushman Bharat for healthcare support
       
    • Prime Minister Skill Development Scheme and Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme for skill enhancement and employment opportunities

Registration Process: The registration process for the E-Shram Card is simple and straightforward. It can be done online through the official E-Shram portal. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Visit the E-Shram Portal: Access the official website of the E-Shram portal (eshram.gov.in).
     
  2. Registration: Click on the "Register on E-Shram" option to initiate the registration process.
     
  3. Provide Information: Fill in the required details accurately, including personal information, occupation, and contact details.
     
  4. Document Upload: Upload scanned copies of essential documents such as Aadhar card, PAN card, and bank account details.
     
  5. Verification: Verify the provided information and submit the registration form.
     
  6. Issuance of E-Shram Card: Upon successful verification, a unique 10-digit E-Shram Card number will be issued to the applicant.
