In a civilization like India which is deeply rooted in its cultures and costumes, Samuhik Vivah holds great importance for many reasons, even in the ancient time the Kings used to organise mass marriages for the one who was unable to do so. This Vivah helps in the reduction of the financial burden associated with traditions involved with marriages.
Marriage is an important institution in society as it gives stability and unity. It also provides a legal framework for families and children to ensure their protection. Marriage is a way to show love and commitment to a partner. In Indian culture, it is a familiar acceptance of the union of men and women intent to protect, preserve and observe social obligations. However, some people in society are unable to marry their children due to their economic condition. Thus, there are a lot of schemes by the government to help these people and some NGOs (Non-governmental organisations) are also providing aid to the needy ones. One such NGO that has been organising Samuhik Vivah to support families who cannot bear the expense of marriage is the Maheshwar Laxmi Memorial Foundation by Dr Anil Kumar.
By organising this ceremony, marriages are more accessible and affordable for families who might otherwise struggle to bear these costs individually. It also promotes social equality by ensuring that all couples, regardless of socioeconomic status, can get married. It eliminates the notion that weddings are only for wealthy or well-off families, providing an opportunity for couples from economically disadvantaged backgrounds to celebrate their love and married life together.
Dr Anil Kumar Founder of the NGO Maheshwar Laxmi Memorial Foundation has been giving his contribution to the fulfilment of this notable work of social welfare for quite some time. He bears all the expenses of the samuhik vivah and also gives the couples aid from the government’s side of Rs 51000. While talking about the same, he expresses, “We are supporting the ones, who are incompetent to enjoy one of the glorious rituals of Indian culture. We are providing a platform for families to develop a relationship with each other and show their love and compassion.”
Mass marriages often prioritise the empowerment of women by offering financial support and assistance. Maheshwar Laxmi Memorial Foundation, the organising committee provides financial aid, gifts or essential household items to the bride and groom. This not only alleviates the financial burden on the couple but also empowers women to participate actively in decision-making and take charge of their lives. Since multiple families are involved in the event, they get to interact and develop bonds with other families, creating a wider support network and community. This can foster goodwill, collaboration, and mutual assistance in the future.
Along with samuhik vivah, Maheshwar Laxmi Memorial Foundation’s Mission is also to spread and propagate knowledge and create awareness on various health issues. The founder further added, "We are also working in the welfare of war widows, disabled and retired defence personnel and make them independent by various measures including their resettlement, providing alternative and second occupation, and providing them information and knowledge for access to the various schemes provided by the central government and state government.”
Dr Anil’s vision of establishing the Maheshwar Laxmi Memorial Foundation is to build a world in which all poor people attain the right to survival, protection, development and participation. For his contribution to society, Dr Anil Kumar has also been honoured with the Guest Of Honour award at the reputed Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam Inspiration Awards 2023, held at Vigyan Bhawan.
