Yashwant Sinha is an Indian politician. In 1984, he resigned from his IAS position and joined Janata Dal party. He has served as the Finance Minister and External Affairs Minister of India.

Yashwant Sinha is an Indian politician. He was born on 6 November 1937 in Asthana, Bihar. His sun sign is Scorpio. He earned a graduate degree from Patna University, Bihar. His father’s name was Bipin Bihari Saran, and his mother’s name is Dhana Devi. 

He is married to Neelima Sinha. They are parents to two sons, Sumant Sinha and Jayant Sinha, and a daughter named Sharmila.

After obtaining a master's degree in political science in 1958, Yashwant Sinha worked as a professor at Patna University until 1960.

In the year 1960, he joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). He served as a civil officer for more than 24 years.  

Yashwant Sinha’s political journey

In 1984, Yashwant Sinha resigned from his IAS position and joined Janata Dal party. 

In 1986, he became the All India General Secretary of Janata Dal. He was elected to Rajya Sabha in 1988. 

From November 1990 to June 1991, he served as Finance Minister in Chandrashekhar's cabinet. He is also known as the first Finance Minister to break the 53-year-old tradition of presenting India's Union Budget at 5 pm local time.

Yashwant Sinha authored the book titled ‘Confessions of an Indigenous Reformer.’

Yashwant Sinha’s significant roles

In the year 1996, he became the national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In 1998, he was appointed Union Finance Minister in the cabinet of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

On 1 July 2002, he was appointed as the External Affairs Minister in the cabinet of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

On 25 April 2015, the French government awarded him France's highest civilian award Officier de la Légion d'Honneur (Officer of the Legion of Honour).

Yashwant Sinha’s candidature in presidential elections

Yashwant Sinha resigned from Bharatiya Janata Party in the year 2018. On 13 March 2021, he joined All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).

In June 2022, he resigned from All India Trinamool Congress ahead of the presidential elections. The same year, he was selected by the Combined Opposition Parties. 

In the 2022 presidential elections, Yashwant Sinha lost to NDA Presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu by a significant margin.
