Swapna Barman is an Indian athlete. She received training from the 'Sports Authority of India Campus'. With the help of scholarships, Swapna participated in several state and national level competitions. She won a gold medal in 2018 Asian Games in women's category of heptathlon. 

Swapna Barman is an Indian athlete. She was born on 29 October 1996 in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. Her sun sign is Scorpio. Her father’s name is Panchanan Barman; he works as a Rickshaw puller. Her mother, Basana, works in tea fields. Swapna has four siblings.

Interesting facts about Swapna

Swapna belongs to a poor family. In the year 2013, her father suffered a fatal stroke. From then her family started facing financial crisis.

Swapna has 6 toes on each foot and due to which she has to face a lot of problems in running. Buying shoes in the appropriate size is quite difficult for her.  

Swapna runs her household with the prize money she earns.

She was sponsored by the 'GoSports Foundation' through the 'Rahul Dravid Athlete Mentorship Program' and financial assistance was also provided by ONGC as regular support.

Scholarship

In 2016, she received a sports scholarship of Rs 1.5 lakh.

She has received training from the 'Sports Authority of India Campus' in Kolkata.

Swapna secured the first position in the heptathlon at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships held at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.

Swapna's win at the Asian Games

During the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships, Swapna fainted during the final round of the 800 metres, despite which she finished fourth.

In the year 2017, she won the gold medal in the Patiala Federation Cup. 

Within one year, she broke many records in the world of sports.

Winning the gold medal

In 2018, at the Asian Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia, Swapna won the gold medal in the women's category of heptathlon (100m, high jump, 200m, shot put, javelin throw, long jump, and 800m). After her success, she became the first Indian heptathlete to win a gold medal at the Asian Games.

She was widely appreciated across the country for winning the gold medal despite the pain in her teeth.

Praises for Swapna

Swapna's family celebrated her victory by distributing sweets in Ghospara (Swapna's village). It was the first ever gold medal win from West Bengal in Heptathlon in Asian Games.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Swapna for bringing home the gold medal in heptathlon at the Asian Games.
