Sunil Gavaskar is a former Indian cricketer. On 13 July 1974, he made his international debut against England in Leeds. Sunil Gavaskar was the first Indian batsman to score more than 10,000 runs.

Sunil Gavaskar is a former Indian cricketer. He was born on 10 July 1949 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. His sun sign is Cancer. He attended St Xavier’s University, Mumbai. His father’s name was Manohar Gavaskar, and his mother’s name was Meenal Gavaskar. He has two sisters, Nutan Gavaskar and Kavita Vishwanath.

Interesting facts about Sunil Gavaskar

In his childhood, he sought inspiration from wrestler Maruti Vadar. 

His uncle, Madhav Mantri was a former Indian Test wicket keeper. 

Interestingly, Sunil Gavaskar has also starred in a few movies. 

He played the lead role in the Marathi film ‘Saavali Premchhi’. Along with this, he has also been seen in the Hindi film ‘Malamaal.

Sunil Gavaskar’s glimpse can be seen in the famous song ‘Dum Maro Dum’.

He lent his voice to a popular Marathi song ‘Yaduniye Mellin Thambayla Vyam Kameni’ written by Shantaram Nandgavankar.

Sunil’s cricket debut

On 13 July 1974, he made his international debut against England in Leeds. 

In the year 1975, he made the record for scoring the slowest runs in a World Cup match against England. He scored only 36 runs in 174 balls.

In an interview, Sunil shared that in his career he liked to play against West Indies team. 

He took retirement from international cricket on 5 November 1987. He played his last match against England in Mumbai. 

Sunil Gavaskar’s personal life

He is popular among his friends for mimicking his fellow players.

He started ‘Champ Foundation’ to provide financial assistance to players from poor financial background. 

In the year 2013, he was the co-owner of the Mumbai team in the Indian Badminton League (IBL) along with actor Nagarjuna.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy was started as a tribute to Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border.

Sunil Gavaskar has authored four books namely, Sunny Days, Idol, Run N Ruins, and One Day Wonders. All of them are based on his career as a cricketer.

Sunil Gavaskar was the first Indian batsman to score more than 10,000 runs. 

Before Sachin Tendulkar, he held the record of making 34 centuries in Test cricket. 

He holds the record of scoring the highest number of 774 runs in his debut innings.

He is the only batsman to have scored four centuries in a row at Port of Spain and Wankhede.
